Generation No. 1

 

1.  MORRIS (MOISHE)1 ESKIN was born Abt. 1878 in RUSSIA, and died 1953.  He married RACHEL Bet. 1897 - 1898.  She was born Abt. 1880 in RUSSIA, and died Abt. 1934.

 

Notes for MORRIS (MOISHE) ESKIN:

Family surname, according to Ruth Eskin Skurnik, was Eskins, "which was the name on my father's birth certificate and mine and my brother's -- at some point Sam dropped the "s" because the rest of the Eskin family spelled it that way -- and quite a bit later, my father and grandfather also changed it to Eskin."

 

According to Stanley's manuscript about his grandfather "we do not know when nor at what age Morris Eskin, doubtless fleeing pogroms, emigrated from the Russian empire, probably from Smolensk (or maybe Kiev: Smolensk was outside the Pale,  whereas Kiev was just inside). His name was probably Moishe, which was edited into 'Morris".  Let us presume he was in his twenties and came with a wife,  though he might have arrived at about age fifteen and married here.  It was most likely in the 1880s, perhaps the early '90s.  The port of entry was most likely, and classically,  New York, but he wandered south a ways and lived in Washington [D.C.] for some time,  until moving to Baltimore in 1898, shortly after the birth of Sam."

 

1910 Baltimore Census, shows him  living on Bell Street.   Morris' occupation shown as  Engineer Locomotive, and states thathe  came to this country 1890.  Census shows he did  not own the house, but rented.

 

Stanley's ms shows that Morris worked on the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad.

Notes for RACHEL:

On Baltimore, MD 1910 census, shown married 11 years, and  came to this country in  1895,  occupation shown as Saleslady, Grocery Store.  [ Need her maiden name.] (Need to locate boat passenger list information.)

Was known as "Ray" according to her granddaughter, Ruth Eskin Skurnik "...she died when I was 10 years old -- she was the sweetest person on the face of the earth and practically raised me until her death.  Sam once told me that he attributed his good health to the wonderful care and nutrition that his mother gave him as a child, and I feel the same is true for me."

 

Died sometime in the 1934. (Need copy of death certificate, place of death and place of burial.)

2.  SAM2 ESKIN (MORRIS (MOISHE)1) was born July 05, 1898 in Washington, DC, and died September 07, 1974 in Woodstock, Ulster, NY.  He married (1) PEARL ANN HEFFERLIN Abt. 1926 in CA.  She was born March 29, 1901, and died June 1981 in Europe.  He married (2) CONNIE EVANS Abt. 1935.  She died Abt. 1988 in Washington, DC.

 

Notes for SAM ESKIN:

Need to verify birth dates and birthplace. Send for birth certificate.

 

I recall Sam said he was born on the 4th of July in Washington, DC, but his birth

not recorded until next day; then family moved soon after to Baltimore, MD.

Notes for CONNIE EVANS:

Married to Goodhue either before or after her liaison with Sam.

 

Connie was sister of lexographe/compiler Bergan Evans, and worked in Washington DC

 with the government.  She collaborated on a book at least once with her brother.  Bergan Evans' official profession was as a Professor of English at Northwestern University -- he was most famous as the expert consulted on the notorious quiz shows, and later, as the host of his own television show about, indeed, language matters.  He also wrote a book on Burton's Anatomy of Melancholy. Notes for OTHO EVANS ESKIN:

LCG met Otho in Jun 1948 in Chapel Hill, NC.

 According to letter from Sam,

Otho has 4 children.  Occupation Diplomat.  (apparently retired in 1999)

 

 

 

3.  JAMES2 ESKIN (MORRIS (MOISHE)1) was born August 12, 1900 in Washington, DC, and died May 1985 in Palm Beach, FL.  He married DOROTHY SINGER.

James worked for UPS -- Sam helped him get the job, so Sam told me.

Jim appears with parents and his family on Baltimore, MD 1910 Census.
