ALAN CATLIN, POET

Block Island Winter

Thin veneer of

white ice on

shallow pools

surrounding islands

of dead saw

grasses, broken

reeds; rilled

dunes coated by

sheets of artificial

glass near North

Point Lighthouse

this deep freezing

dawn, the sea smoke

rising

Interior Landscape #34: Albert Bierstadt

Puget Sound on the Pacific

Encroaching clouds are a veil,

smothering waves swept to a fury,

fishermen driven landward in skiffs

gather their equipment, store boats

upshore, secure against encroachment

of storm. a blackness darker than weather.

Edward Munch: The Seine at St. Cloud 1890

The effect

of moon

light

on the Seine

foreshadows

sorrow;

darkness

a tide
